Do I need to pay somebody to manage my Google listing?

For most small businesses, no. Correct hours, real photographs, the right category and replies to reviews are the bulk of the value and you can do all four yourself.

We sell a department that does this and we would still rather you did it yourself if you have the time. It is genuinely not difficult; it is just never urgent, which is why it does not get done.

What is worth paying for?

Consistency over time. The value is in hours being right before every holiday and every review getting a reply, for years, which is exactly the kind of thing a busy owner stops doing by month three.

What should I never pay for?

Anybody offering to guarantee a map ranking or to post fake reviews. Both are against the platform's rules and can get the listing suspended, which is a much worse position than a mediocre ranking.
