What to ask before hiring an answering service for a cleaning business

The question is not whether somebody picks up. It is what you are holding afterwards: a name and a number, or a job you can price and schedule.

What should I ask an answering service before signing up?

What details they capture beyond a name and number, whether they can book into your calendar, what happens out of hours, how you receive the information, what a busy month actually costs, and what they do with sales calls.

The capture question is the one that separates them. A service that takes a message leaves you making the same call again to find out what the job is. A service that collects bedrooms, condition, deadline and access has done the work.

Ask about sales calls specifically. A meaningful share of inbound to a small business is somebody selling something, and passing those through means you are paying to be marketed to.

How much should an answering service cost a cleaning company?

Pricing is usually per call, per minute, or a monthly minimum with overages, so the honest comparison is cost per booked job rather than headline rate. Ask what a month with fifty calls actually costs, not the starting price.

Overage is where the surprise lives. A plan that looks cheap at thirty calls can double in a busy month, which is exactly the month you least want an unexpected bill.

Is a human service better than an AI one?

For handling something genuinely unusual, a good human is better. For collecting the same six details reliably every time, at eight in the evening, without a minimum, software is usually better and cheaper.

The real test for either is what happens when they do not know. A person who invents an answer and an assistant that guesses cause the same problem. Ask what happens when the caller asks something outside the script.

Can I use both?
Plenty do. Software takes the overflow and the out of hours calls; a person handles daytime when somebody is at a desk. What matters is that both write into the same place, or you end up with two lists and no complete picture.
